During the first phase, a controlled diamond exfoliation and peeling occurs, and in phase two, the skin soaks up cream, serum or a mask that penetrates deeper and more effectively into the skin for optimal results. Because of the advanced technologies, the team at the high end product line is constantly sharing the luxurious products that leave skin feeling flawless. The article highlights a NYC spa that provides “bird poop facials” for roughly $180. The article states, “That’s what goes into facials at a luxury spa where the traditional Japanese treatment using imported Asian nightingale excrement mixed with rice bran goes for $180 a pop. About 100 women and men go into the Shizuka New York skin care salon, just off Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue, each month to get the treatment, which is promoted as a way to keep the face soft and smooth using an enzyme in the poop to gently exfoliate the skin.” The article spotlights Dr. Michele Green, a Manhattan cosmetic dermatologist, who said that while the nightingale facial “definitely has some rejuvenating effect, I don’t think it’s any different than, say, an apricot scrub or a mask that you could buy in a local pharmacy.” Forever Flawless offers a better way to obtain luxury skin care. “Forever Flawless – Diamond Infused Skin Care – capitalizes on a new and unique method of infusing genuine natural diamond powder into its formulas.

ESRD, Diabetes Multiply Risk of CV Events

Diabetes in California schools: State high court allows school employees to give insulin shots

“I find of interest that the presence of ESRD/diabetes appeared to be more important for [stroke] and CHF than MI,” Eckel told MedPage Today in an email. “The male-versus-female risk difference was also interesting.” Analysis of various risk factors showed that hypertension remained a risk for all outcomes, but the data could not provide insight into the adequacy of blood pressure control or the treatments used, he added. The study was supported by the National Cheng-Kung University Hospital. The authors had no relevant disclosures. 0 Site Map 2013 MedPage Today, LLC.

The decision settles a legal battle between advocates for diabetic students and the California Nurses Association, which maintains only licensed nurses should be allowed to handle the task in public schools. “State law in effect leaves to each student’s physician, with parental consent, the question whether insulin may safely and appropriately be administered by unlicensed school personnel, and reflects the practical reality that most insulin administered outside of hospitals and other clinical settings is in fact administered by laypersons,” Justice Kathryn Mickle Werdegar wrote for the court. The Supreme Court reversed an appeals court ruling that found state law does not permit unlicensed school personnel, such as teachers or administrators, to give insulin shots to California’s estimated 14,000 diabetic public school students. The appeals court, in a decision written by now-Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye, concluded it is up the Legislature, not the courts, to clarify the law. Cantil-Sakauye did not participate in the case at the Supreme Court, recusing herself because she had written the lower court opinion. Parents, backed by groups such as the American Diabetes Association, argue that the nurses’ union has put students in a precarious health position in a state that has a student-to-nurse ratio of about 2,200 to 1, one of the worst such ratios in the nation. They argue that trained school employees who volunteer can handle the task when a nurse is unavailable, just as parents and other family members do at home.

Type 2 Diabetes Might Harm Young Brain, Study Suggests

We have to look at the disease in a much more comprehensive way than just affecting eyes, kidneys, toes and feet,” said study co-author Dr. Antonio Convit, a professor of psychiatry at New York University Langone Medical Center. According to Convit, type 2 diabetes — which is often caused by excess weight — now makes up about 40% of cases of diabetes in children. In the past, kids were much more likely to have type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes. But the rise in obesity among kids has greatly boosted the number of type 2 diabetes cases. In adults, some diabetics show signs that their abilities to learn and remember things are more limited than in other people, Convit said. But it’s hard to know whether that’s a result of diabetes or of heart disease that causes “plumbing problems” — or clogged blood vessels — in the brain, he said.

California Supreme Court Ruling Protects the Safety and Health of California Students With Diabetes

“School staff can volunteer to be trained to provide diabetes care when a school nurse is unavailable. This means parents of children with diabetes can feel confident of their children’s well-being when they send them to school every day.” The Association recognizes the vital role school nurses play in maintaining the overall health of all students, including those with diabetes. The Court’s decision in no way lessens that role, as school nurses oversee diabetes care in schools, and coordinate and provide training to other school personnel so they can administer insulin when the school nurse is not available. The Association stands ready to assist and urges all California schools to take the necessary steps to train school staff in proper diabetes care. The case came before the California Supreme Court after nearly eight years of litigation, which began with a class action lawsuit brought by the Association that was resolved by a settlement agreement allowing trained non-medical school personnel to administer insulin when a nurse is not available. That provision of the settlement was challenged in the current lawsuit by several nursing organizations, leading to today’s decision.

Together with Japan, and working in close partnership with our host governments, we will proactively move to prevent under nutrition from taking root, Gomez. It said to determine suitable methods of collaboration on nutrition, WFP has initiated discussions with Ghana and Sierra Leone, as well as with UN agencies and several Japanese partners including the Japan International Cooperation Agency, non-governmental organisations, and the private sector. It stated that in Sierra Leone, WFP is also partnering with the United Nations Population Fund on issues of health, well-being and nutritional status of adolescent girls and women particularly during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The statement said this financial package follows the Fifth Tokyo International Conference on African Development held in Japan in June, when WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin and Parliamentary Vice-Minister Abe reaffirmed the importance of adequate nutrition for mothers and children, and agreed to launch nutrition programmes in Africa. An estimated 165 million children suffer from stunting globally, and in sub-Saharan Africa a staggering 40 per cent of children under the age of five are stunted. Although stunting rates in Ghana average 23 per cent, in food-insecure areas, such as in the Northern Region, the rates are as high as 37 per cent.

Women drive nutrition store sales in Chennai

Dheeraj Rajamohan, manager of Gold’s Gym at Adyar attributes the rise in consumption of such supplements (allied with focused physical exercise) to the universal desire of both men and women for athletic bodies. “More women today are leading active lifestyles, participating in athletics, playing tennis, swimming and so on, and they cross all professions. In the end, everybody wants to look good,” says Rajamohan. He says sports nutrition supplements marketed here now also portray women bodybuilders on the packaging, a clear play at the growing women’s market.

Workshop on nutrition and counseling ends

Participants from the Sefwi Wiawso and Bibiani Government Hospitals, included clinical officers, pharmacists as well as nutrition, disease control, data officers and storekeepers attended the event. Mr. Emmanuel Badiena, Deputy Western Regional Nutrition Officer of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), said PLWA and TB patients were easily pre-disposed to malnutrition because HIV and TB put very high toll of energy requirement and other nutrients on them. He said malnourished PLWA and TB patients stood high risk of running down physically as a result of infections. Mr. Badiena said the workshop aimed at training health personnel to identify malnutrition among PLWA and TB patients, to enable them to appropriately counsel and support their clients. He said officials at health centres would educate PLWA who access anti-retroviral therapy and TB patients on the appropriate nutrition for them.

Canned oranges and chocolate milk. Its hardly a feast, but dont tell that to the children for whom this meal makes all the difference. The experience of a food bank running a summer lunch program for needy children in rural Tennessee shows that more ways must be found to feed the millions of children who go hungry when schools let out. The Posts Eli Saslow recently told the story of a converted school bus that travels the hills of Appalachia in Tennessee to take food to needy children. It was a heart-rending portrait, made all the more poignant by the fact that the need it depicted exists in every part of the United States. A recent study by the nonprofit Feeding America ranked the District second in the nation for child food insecurity, defined as not having access at all times to enough food for healthy living. The group estimates that one in four children in the nation experiences food insecurity.

Since BDNF is involved in the brain’s development and growth of new cells, the effect was more profound on the younger rats, with their still-developing brains and more rapid cell turnover, compared to adult rats. It Helps You Learn New Tricks Even one exercise session can help you retain physical skills by enhancing what’s commonly known as “muscle memory” or “motor memory,” according to new research published in PlosOne. As the New York Times reported, men who were taught to follow a complicated pattern on a computer and subsequently exercised were better able to remember the pattern in subsequent days than the men who didn’t exercise after the initial squiggle test. It Supports Problem-Solving In one study, mice that exercised by running not only generated new neurons, but those neurons lit up when the mice performed unfamiliar tasks like navigating a new environment. It Helps Alleviate Symptoms Of Depression When you exercise, your pituitary gland releases endorphins to help mitigate the physical stress and pain you are experiencing. But those endorphins may play a more important and longer-lasting role: they could help alleviate symptoms of depression, according to a Mayo Clinic report.

This can lead to dry eye.” The students also worry about cost of digital textbooks, the study said. “The digital text can cost more than a print textbook and the student can’t resell it after he’s used it,” said Johnson. “Also, the students can’t all afford the best devices. Most of the participants said they have laptops and phones but would like to have iPads or e-readers.” Although this did not occur in the study, Johnson said, students said they also worry about not being able to access digital texts because of mechanical problems such as low battery life. Despite growing up in the computer age, some of the participants they “just prefer to hold a book in their hands and turn the pages” rather than use digital devices, Johnson said.

Brianne Vandenberg, of New Lenox, a senior-to-be at Miami University in Ohio, prefers printed text to reading on computer screens or tablets.

This is because the surgeon needs a light to see the back of the eye, to check that the laser is on-target. However, the old machines couldnt produce both a light and a laser beam at the same time, as the light would obstruct the path of the laser, so the light would have to be switched off a few seconds before the laser fired, and the surgeon couldnt be sure the floaters hadnt moved. Now a new machine, developed in Australia and called the LEH-Vitlase, has a stronger beam of light that remains in place until a nano-second before the laser fires, enabling the surgeon to target the floater precisely. Through a microscope, I could see Neil had around ten spots as well as the line hed described. I also saw sheets of protein which had broken from the jelly and were likely to cause more floaters in the future. I then targeted each floater individually, pressing a button to fire a laser beam through the cornea (the transparent front part of the eye), the lens and into the vitreous area. The laser fires three shots per second.

Duke researchers will offer ‘bionic eye’ for the blind

An annoying floater in the center of your vision sometimes can be relieved by rolling your eyes around, which swirls the vitreous gel in the eyeball and gets the floater to move away. A surgical procedure called vitrectomy removes the vitreous gel from the eye and replaces it with saline solution, but it is a major procedure that normally is not considered worth the risk. When Retinal Detachment Is the Problem The tugging from the vitreous gel can sometimes cause a more serious medical condition in which the retina tears and detaches from the eye. If this occurs, you could partially or completely lose your vision in that eye. Symptoms of retinal detachment include: A sudden increase in the number of eye floaters and flashes you are experiencing, or the sudden appearance of them for the first time. The loss of your peripheral vision, usually appearing like a curtain or shadow that moves toward the center of your vision over time. Vision that has become blurred or distorted.

The issue also found a mention during a meeting held by directorate general of health services, New Delhi, last year in August. The figures available with the directorate of medical education, which registers transplant centres and hospitals, suggest that 1,822 eyes were donated for corneal transplantation in the last five years in the state. Only 69% could be used for transplantation, while 24% were utilized for research and the rest for medical studies. More than 90% of all organ donations can be traced to Indore. “Forty per cent of eyes donated annually in the country could not be used for transplantation due to unsuitability of the donor organ or unavailability of recipients,” says Dr S K Jhawar of M K International Eyebank, Indore. 1,615 eyes have been donated to the eye bank since it began in 2009.

Glaucoma glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness. The patients generally have no symptoms, until the disease is advanced and difficult to treat. Glaucoma is diagnosed by an eye doctor who measures pressure in the eye, examines the optic nerve in the back of the eye, and performs visual field tests. Eye health and vision screening guidelines for adults and children: when should eyes be examined?

It was something I should have done a couple years ago, yet a small, gnawing fear kept me finding excuses. I had a lot friends tell me it was a piece of cake, and they were right. Yet I found reasons not to do it. Finally, I decided that if I had come through a stroke, learning to walk and write again, surely I could do something that everyone said was minor. Actually the hardest part after I made the appointment was the morning of the surgery. There was no eating or drinking my morning coffee. Why Dieting Must Die

Cheat on Your Diet — Or You Might Cheat on Your Partner

Successful Dieting Leads to Infidelity

Starvation leads to harms, including the possibility of premature death — and so it is bad, because it does bad. Starving children are endangered children. If you doubt that children are endangered by obesity and its metabolic complications, you simply haven’t been paying attention. That case is indisputable. And so my simple assertion is that the neglect is the same in both cases: feeding yourself as your children starve, or dieting while your children get fat.

Wieght loss & dieting: Sugar and artifical sweeteners aren’t doing your diet any favors

Trying to lose the baby weight ? That’s great for you — but things might not turn out so well for your partner. A new study from Monmouth University’s Department of Psychology reports that dieting makes people more likely to commit infidelity . Wait, what?Apparently, it has to do with self-control.Of the 32 college students who participated in the study (okay, yes, it’s a small sample!), half were placed under food restrictions, which made them much more likely to accept a date offer — even though all of the participants were in committed relationships. Researchers explained that resisting temptation in one area of your life — like with dieting — usually decreases self-control in other areas. Our advice?

Weight loss and dieting: To successfully lose weight you need to have and use a bathroom scale

The scientific community had been waiting for the results of this study for a long time, because this was no ordinary trial. This was the “Look AHEAD” (Action for HEAlth in Diabetes) trial led by eminent researcher Rena Wing. With its rigorous design and strict low-calorie diet, it had accomplished what other trials of this magnitude had not: Participants in it had been successful at their diets for four years. The three of us know how rare this is. Our careful review of the research on dieting left us ready to shut the door on further dieting research, because it so seldom leads to sustained weight loss. We analyzed the 20 most rigorous tests of low-calorie, low-fat, or low-carbohydrate diets that looked at how much weight people kept off for two or more years. According to these randomized controlled trials, which are the gold standard form of evidence for any treatment, the average amount of weight loss maintained by dieters for at least two years didn’t even reach two pounds.

Dieting can make you fatter, say scientists

New research shows cutting fatty foods from diets can make the body desire those food more at the end of the diet. Picture: TSPL

This can happen as early as a few weeks into dieting. Weight gain In addition to the threats of muscle loss and rebound overeating, the body has a third mechanism to maintain weight during a diet: slowing your metabolic rate. It does this by lowering levels of the thyroid hormone T3, which regulates metabolism. Frequent dieting only worsens the effect, making sustainable weight loss a distant possibility. Fat deficiency While low-fat dieting has been in fashion for decades, healthy fats from foods like meat, fish, eggs, avocados, and nuts and seeds are absolutely necessary for health.

New research into diet and nutrition has found that the more you deny your body high-calorie food the more likely you are to binge on it once you hit your target weight. The findings could also apply to the popular 5:2 diet which requires two days of eating just 500 calories, followed by five days of normal eating. The recent study, carried out by Dr Eric Stice at the Oregon Research Institute, looked at why, once the diet is over, many people pile on the pounds again. The main findings showed that the longer people restricted the amount of calories they ate, the larger their craving for high calorie foods became. Dr Stice, who has been studying eating disorders and obesity for 20 years, said: The story is a familiar one: most people are able to lose weight while dieting but once the diet is over, the weight comes back. Many of us can personally attest that caloric deprivation weight loss diets typically do not produce lasting weight loss.
